The National Arts Festival (NAF) is an annual festival of performing arts in Makhanda, South Africa. It is the largest arts festival on the African continent[2] and one of the largest performing arts festivals in the world by visitor numbers.
Umshado tells the story of a young man s journey from the village of Moruleng in Rustenburg to Mamelodi in Pretoria.The play opens during a ceremonial preparation for his entrance into manhood and it captures this initiation – Rite of Passage.

Much about 2021 is still unknown but we have set our sights on a hybrid Festival in July 2021. This means there will be a live physical Festival in Makhanda and a virtual online element as there was in 2020.
